Harry Potter is a universally loved character. No matter what age, what gender and what nationality you belong to, Harry Potter books have broken down all these barriers. In fact, Harry Potter’s appeal has now gone beyond humans as Artificial Intelligence too, is writing fan fiction novels about the boy who lived! Botnik Studios trained their AI System to write like JK Rowling and created a three-page fan-fiction!
A three-page piece of fan-fiction, titled ‘Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash’ was written by an AI system after analyzing all the seven Harry Potter books. The AI tool makes use of text prediction technology to write like Rowling. This program has been developed by Jamie Brew.
Jamie, who has worked with The Onion and Clickhole in the past, is known for such AI-written pieces of fan fiction. In the past he has created predictive text based X-Files fan fiction and Craigslist ads. However unlike the past, this time around it was a more detailed project as it involved algorithmic suggestion and authorial discretion learnt from multiple writers.
“The castle grounds snarled with a wave of magically magnified wind,” it begins. “The sky outside was a great black ceiling, which was full of blood.” While this is just the starting – the story gets quite weird from here as Ron turns into a pile of spiders and tries to eat Hermoine’s parents – who appear to have regained their memory, magically!
This Harry Potter chapter written by AI, as well as the program which was used to write it can be accessed at Github. In fact, if you read the entire 3 page chapter written by Artificial Intelligence, it might appear more well written than what many fan-fiction writers try to write. Of course, AI has a lot to learn when it comes to writing Harry Potter novels, but this is quite a – dare we say – magical start!
