So on Tuesday, AT&T announced that they will allow free call blocking service to its customers on an opt-out basis. As a result, they became the first major league company to allow its customers this service.
They were able to do this after a June Federal Communications Commission ruling. This ruling allows phone service providers to offer call-blocking on an opt-out basis.
How did AT&T make it happen?
Spam calls are an irritation for everyone. These spam calls can be both legal and illegal. According to industry data, there were 4.3 billion spam/robot calls made just last month itself. This number includes both legal and illegal calls.
AT&T said in a statement:
The Commission’s recent action builds on a years-long effort to enable broader adoption of call-blocking tools and allow providers to better protect their customers and networks. AT&T remains committed to working with our government and industry partners in the ongoing battle against unwanted and illegal robocalls.
Everyone wants to get rid of them and it is best if our service providers could do it beforehand. AT&T’s service is going to automatically block the calls that they think are fraudulent. As for the spam calls, customers will get an alert on their device.
They are going to make this available to all newer connections. The older connections will be able to avail this service in the coming few months.

What’s the catch?
AT&T will offer free and automatic call blocking services but there’s a catch. People who want all the benefits of this offer will have to pay $4 every month. The free version would allow customers to block fraudulent calls and get an alert for spam calls. But the service that gives the most protection is for $4 a month.
This catch could’ve been recognised by a smart entity only. Because while the agency allowed service providers to block spam calls, they didn’t necessarily ask them to do it for free.
This decision is a very smart one from AT&T because they took care of everything. Blocking spam calls would keep their audience happy while charging them for it would the company happy.
