KaiOS is joining the league of the most popular mobile OS’es at a very fast pace. The main highlight of the OS is that it is trying to bring smartphone-like features to extremely cheap phones with keypads. This is the same OS that runs on most of the Jio phones in India.
It has been an extremely successful venture and people have been loving it on their feature phones. The KaiOS team received a $22 million funding the previous year. It has also received a $50 million funding just about now too.
The round for funding KaiOS was managed by Cathay Innovation. It included giants like TCL and Google.
What are the team’s plans for the latest investment?
“With the Series B funding, Kai plans to expand into new markets, invest in product portfolio research and development, and expand its ecosystem by accelerating the growth of the KaiOS developer community; to further bridge the digital divide,” was said by KaiOS Technologies in a statement.
The team is looking to better its software and make it faster and reliable. They are trying to insert as many features as possible to give the users an enriching experience even at that low price point.
Google’s plan for KaiOS
Google isn’t just bringing money to the table of the KaiOS team and platform. It has provided them with apps like Youtube, Google Maps and it’s widely used Google Assistant. Google has also announced that they are trying their best. They want to bring Voice Typing to KaiOS and should have it in soon.
KaiOS Technologies has also announced that its device partners have shipped mobile phones in the tune of more than 100 million. This shows how quickly the OS is growing since they had reported a figure of 85 million back in February at the Mobile World Conference.
Also, let’s hope that this OS can provide connectivity in low-income areas. Where even a $20 difference in the price of devices is huge.
