The Winds Of Winter

The Winds Of Winter has kept fans waiting for more than a decade. Author George RR Martin has promised fans that he is now inching closer to the end, at long last. Writing on his blog, Martin confirms:

“No, sorry, still not done, but I do inch closer. It is a big big book. I try not to dwell on that too much. I write a chapter at a time, a page at a time, a sentence at a time, a word at a time. It is the only way. And sometimes I rewrite.”

GRRM Working On Projects Other Than The Winds Of Winter

Martin has also been busy aside from the book. He also gives an update on all the other shows that he’s been pitching, and has good things to say about the status of HBO’s spinoff House of the Dragon. Besides that, none of his other shows have been getting picked up. He explained,

“I wish I could say that things are also going great on all the other television and film projects I am involved with, either as a producer or as the author of the original source material (i.e. novels and short stories).  I can’t. Very little shooting is taking place, and almost nothing is being greenlit. Of course, development continues… but there’s a reason they call it ‘development hell’. Sigh.”

Martin is involved in several TV projects, including an HBO adaptation of Nnedi Okorafor’s fantasy novel Who Fears Death. With that pesky virus slowing things down, most of those series are stuck, but HBO’s Game of Thrones Targaryen-focused prequel series is moving along nicely. It may be released sometime in 2022. He wrote–

“[W]e are making great progress on the HBO prequel HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. [Showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik] are in London, casting has begun, it is all looking very exciting.”

The Lannisters, Samwell Getting POVs Is Hinted

Going back to the book though, Martin says:

“Of late I have been spending a lot of time with the Lannisters.  Cersei and Tyrion in particular. I’ve also paid a visit to Dorne, and dropped in to Oldtown a time or three. In addition to turning out new chapters, I’ve been revising some old ones (some very old)… including, yes, some stuff I read at cons ages ago, or even posted online as samples. I tweak stuff constantly, and sometimes go beyond tweaking, moving things around, combining chapters, breaking chapters in two, reordering stuff.”

GRRM Will Declare When Done

Martin does tell his fans to ‘Hang in there, friends’. However, It’s futile to try and predict an exact release date of Winds Of Winter — many have tried and many have failed. For now, we’ll settle for a publishing window.

“Look, I’ve said before, and I will say again, I don’t play games with news about the books. I know how many people are waiting, how long they have been waiting, how anxious they are. I am still working on WINDS. When it’s done, I will announce it here. There won’t be any clues to decipher, any codes or hidden meanings, the announcement will be straightforward and to the point. I won’t time it to coincide with Xmas or Valentine’s Day or Lincoln’s Birthday, the book will not rise from the dead with Jesus on Easter Sunday. When it is done, I will say that’s it is done, on whatever day I happen to finish.”

Slow Progress For The Winds Of Winter

Additionally, he made it clear his progress has been slow,

“I was really on a roll back in June and July. Progress has continued since then, but more slowly… I suffered a gut punch in early August that really had me down for a time, and another, for different reasons, in early September. But I slogged on, and of late I am picking up steam again.”

A Tor user speculates that the book will take around 11 weeks to release, from final manuscript being turned in to the book finally being available in the markets.
